 Maryland

Maryland won a Federal Education Department’s Race to the Top (RTT) Early Childhood System grants, at a White House ceremony in December, Maryland’s own Flora Gee was there as Exhibit A for high quality child care. The 4-year grant, totaling $50 million, will enable Maryland to build a more solid, comprehensive early childhood system that helps to close the Kindergarten entry achievement gap. The money is the infrastructure improvements, not continuing service.

Washington DC

The Latino Childcare Providers Association
of Greater Washington DC

It was incorporated to support Latino childcare providers serving in the community. The mission of the association is to promote quality care and education through the development, support and strengthening of professional development opportunities for Latino childcare providers in greater Washington, DC, MD, VA and the District.

The new Association was born from a group of providers that had met informally for the past eight years, with the support of the now extinct Centro Familia, known as LEONAS.

CITE announced that Debra DePinho is the recipient of the first June Moss Handler award, honoring one of CITE's founders.  Debra was recognized on Friday, March 1, 2013, at the 28th Annual CITE Conference at the Renaissance Woodbridge, and I was pleased to be in attendance to witness the honor.

All holders of CITE's NJ Infant/Toddler Credential were eligible for consideration for the award.  Six nominees were selected based on their continued professional growth since receiving the credential.  Debra has owned and operated her own private family child care program in her home for the last 20 years.  The other 5 candidates work in child care centers.

CITE announced that Debra DePinho is the recipient of the first June Moss Handler award, honoring one of CITE’s founders.  Debra was recognized on Friday, March 1, 2013, at the 28th Annual CITE conference at the Renaissance Woodbridge, and I was pleased to be in attendance to witness the honor.

All holders of CITE’s NJ Infant/Toddler Credential were eligible for consideration for the award.  Six nominees were selected based on their continued professional growth since receiving the credential. Debra has owned and operated her own private family child care program in her home for the past 20 years. The five other candidates work in child care centers.

According to CITE selection committee, Debra is the candidate who showed the most professional development since receiving the NJ Infant/Toddler Credential, including her continued leadership and her quest for early childhood education.   Debra has a Child Development Associate (CDA) certificate and her program was accredited in November 2012 by the National Association of Family Child Care (NAFCC).  She is the vice president of the New Jersey Family Child Care Providers’ Association (NJFCCPA) and an alternate member of the Policy Advisory Board of Professional Impact NJ.  In addition, Debra spends her weekends at armories promoting quality child care for our military families.

CITE awarded Debra a Certificate of Recognition, a signed copy of Dr. Handler’s book, and $500: $250 for her personal use and $250 to be used in her family child care program.

In Debra’s words, “This has been such a great year for me career wise. … Never give up the chance to become educated or to achieve your next goal towards professional development.”

June Moss Handler was at the conference to recognize Debra and the other nominees. Dr. Handler spoke about the history of CITE and encouraged all who work with infants and toddlers to continue to expand their knowledge of child development in order to provide infants and toddlers with optimal care.

CITE said they are delighted to honor their founder with this award and pleased to offer congratulations to Debra DePinho!  I was very pleased to have been in attendance to witness this landmark occasion, an accredited family child care provider earning a top level award.  Thank you, Deb, for your ongoing commitment to quality child care!
