NAFCC Observer Information
Role
A key component of NAFCC’s accreditation process is the observation of the provider at the conclusion of self-study. The observation is conducted by an individual who has met specific eligibility requirements established by the organization. Observers play a critical role in the NAFCC accreditation process.

In order to become an observer, individuals are required to complete the observer application process, attend a two-day Observer Training, and successfully demonstrate skills in observation and documentation.

During the two-day Observer Training participants receive specific information about their role as observers. They are instructed about how the information they gather is used to make decisions regarding award status and they have opportunities to practice and/or ask questions about all aspects of being an accreditation observer. In addition, a substantial portion of the training is spent examining the Quality Standards. Potential observers should leave NAFCC Observer Training confident that they have the knowledge, skills, and information necessary to conduct successful provider observations.

An observer is required to spend at least four hours observing the family child care program. At the end of the four-hour observation the observer leaves the program and prepares for the provider interview. During this break, the observer completes all documentation in the observer workbook, scores all of the standards that are applicable to the provider and the program, and prepares for the interview with the provider to discuss any standards that have been scored less than fully met.
